Acoustic Testing: Key Standards and Measurement Methods
Modern floor coverings and insulation materials are tested for their acoustic properties. They can help reduce noise and enhance living comfort. Whether in a home or a commercial building—the right acoustics make all the difference! We’ll explain the most important properties.
Impact Sound Insulation According to EN ISO 10140
What is measured?
What is measured?
In the source room, walking sounds are simulated using a tapping machine. The resulting impact sound is measured in the room below.
Results
• The rated impact sound insulation (in dB) describes how effectively the flooring reduces impact sound compared to an uncoated concrete floor
• Goal: The lower the value, the better the insulation
Impact sound according to EN 16205
What is measured?
What is measured?
In the source room, impact sounds are also simulated using a tapping machine. However, the sound is measured in the same room.
Results
• The rated impact sound (in dB) indicates how effectively the floor covering reduces impact sound compared to an uncoated concrete floor.
• Loudness (RWS in sone): In addition, the subjectively perceived loudness is calculated.
Sound absorption according to EN ISO 354 & ASTM C423
What is measured?
In a reverberation chamber, the reverberation time (decay behavior of airborne sound) is determined with and without the test object.
Result
• The sound absorption of the material is determined from the difference in reverberation times.
• Application: Important for room acoustics, e.g., in offices, schools, or living spaces.
Why are these measurements important?
• Impact sound insulation: Prevents noise pollution from footsteps in apartment buildings.
• Impact sound: Affects the acoustics in a room—particularly relevant for offices or apartments.
• Sound absorption: Improves room acoustics, reduces reverberation and echoes.
