ZirKuS - Circular, digitalised artificial turf system with integral management of the anthropogenic material store of multi-material artificial turf
Within the ZirKuS project, a circular, digitalised artificial turf system with integrated management of the anthropogenic material store is developed. The requirements of athletic sports (e.g. ball rolling behaviour, rotational resistance, etc.) are taken into account.
The current stock of artificial turf systems is difficult to recycle and requires a holistic approach with regard to the high-quality recovery of materials. This approach will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the installation of a new artificial turf system. A manufacturer of artificial turf as an associated partner will work with partners in the plastics industry, monitoring and digitalisation to leverage the previously untapped circular potential to cover the entire value chain. The proposed business model includes the leasing of the artificial turf system by the court operator. It is the responsibility of the user and manufacturer to maximise the useful life of the artificial turf through monitoring, maintenance, repair and subsequent cascading and to ensure the recyclability of the valuable polymers. This enables a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The cooperation of various partners enables the cleaning and separation of the different material flows with subsequent recycling. Technical and non-technical innovations are implemented for the realisation phase. The project fills a gap by developing a convincing recycling concept for artificial turf systems that utilises secondary raw materials in a high-quality and transparent manner and strengthens the circular economy in Germany. Digital reprocessing enables the efficient use of resources and ensures the traceability of material flows (product passport). The holistic and cooperative approach of the project aims to make sport more sustainable.

“The ZirKuS project is funded under the ‘Resource-Efficient Circular Economy – Circular Textiles’ funding scheme. This forms part of the BMFTR research concept ‘Resource-Efficient Circular Economy’ and aims to promote the high-quality recycling of textiles. We would like to express our gratitude for the funding of our sub-project: ‘Fibre separation, demonstrator production, product passport and life cycle assessment’ and for the commitment of the Ecologic Institute, which, through the accompanying research project ZirTeNet, creates excellent opportunities for networking and exchange within the cross-cutting themes with the other consortium projects.”
