This initiative is driven by stricter legal requirements stemming from the National Circular Economy Strategy and the EU Waste Framework Directive, which will require high-quality material recycling and extended producer responsibility for textile floor coverings in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Textile floor coverings consist of complex multi-layer systems that are currently hardly recyclable and are predominantly only thermally recycled. Although separable carpet constructions with activatable (triggerable) separation layers are increasingly being developed, an economical, mechanical separation process has been lacking until now. AutoSep closes this gap by developing a modular functional model based on suitable force- and form-fitting separation principles that enables the clean separation of the pile and backing layers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The approach begins with the systematic definition of a requirements profile in collaboration with stakeholders from the recycling, mechanical engineering, and carpet industries, as well as the systematic identification of suitable physical separation principles. Building on this, a modular functional prototype will be developed, experimentally validated, and initial approaches for scaling up to industrial levels will be derived.\r\nThe results lay the groundwork for high-quality fiber recycling, new business models in the recycling industry, and a new market segment for textile machinery manufacturing.
